Swarthmore United Methodist Church has a rich history of musical excellence and we strive to continue in that tradition using the best liturgical music of any style.
Music is vitally important to worship, an expression of our shared foundation of faith; we are committed to being a singing congregation, using Psalms, ancient hymns, chant, gospel, folk, bluegrass, spirituals, and world music in addition to contemporary renewal songs and hymns.
Our sanctuary is home to a fine pipe organ built by the Casavant Brothers, installed in 1961. Our music making also employs a grand piano, a three-octave set of hand bells, and the instrumental and vocal talents of our members.
Our choir is a volunteer group who rehearse weekly, from September through May, on Sunday mornings at 9:00 before our 10:00 worship service. We hold additional Thursday evening rehearsals in order to prepare more challenging works and for special services. Participation is encouraged for those who can read music, hold a part and be reasonably faithful in attendance.
